Fares and System Information

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Rapid KL, stylized rapidKL, is the governing body of public transportation in Kuala Lumpur. As of 2019, major efforts have been made to implement cashless payments throughout all transit options, although some areas may still allow you to use cash to purchase tokens for travel. Cash fares are higher than cashless fares. Depending on your transit method (bus vs. rail), the system by which your fare is calculated will differ.

Rail - Distance System

rapidKL’s cashless rail transit fare table. Visit here for more information on cashless vs. cash based payments and higher quality table images.

rapidKL’s rail transit network (LRT, MRT, Monorail) operates on a distance system. Your fare is calculated based on the number of stations you travel.

Distance Example

  • Gombak Station to Taman Melati Station - Fare: RM1.30

  • Ampang Station to Taman Melati Station - Fare: RM6.00

Single Fare Finder

rapidKL has provided an online tool for finding the price of single fares for stations on their rail network. Select your starting and ending stations and the tool will calculate your fare.

Bus - Zone System

rapidKL’s bus transit option operates on a zone system. Individual buses run routes that may go through multiple zones and your fare is calculated based on the number of zones you travel through on a given bus ride. Ensure that you tap on and off so that your fare can be calculated accurately, otherwise you will be charged the maximum fare possible.

Fare Calculation

Although there is no convenient tool for calculating fares like the rail fare calculator, what you can do is look for your bus route and click the route number, count the amount of zones you’ll be travelling through, and then consult the zone fare table. Alternatively, you can call their help line at +60 3-7885-2585.

rapidKL Tickets

There are several options for you to pay your fare when travelling on rapidKL busses and the rapidKL rail network.

MyRapid TouchandGo

The MyRapid TouchandGo card is the most ubiquitous. The card is available for purchase at any LRT, MRT, Monorail station, or from Touch and Go Hubs and selected petrol stations throughout Kuala Lumpur. There is a nominal fee of RM15.00 to purchase the card, of which RM5.00 is for the card and RM10.00 is the balance put onto the card. The card works by loading money onto it, and there are over 9000 reload locations across Malaysia. Some reload locations may charge additional fees, however.

There are subscription packages for subsidized fares if you use RapidKL services frequently. These are known as ‘Smart Packages’. Depending on your frequency of travel, it may be economically advantageous to purchase one of these subscriptions.

KL TravelPass

If you flew into Kuala Lumpur and know that most of your travel will be done via rail, the KL TravelPass is a smart payment card available for purchase which enables two-day unlimited travel on LRT, MRT, and Monorail lines bundled with the option of either a one-way or return trip to an airport via the KLIA Trains (separate from the rapidKL network). This pass is available for purchase at

  • KLIA Platform, Level 1

  • KLIA & KLIA2 International Baggage Reclaim Hall

  • Gateway @ KLIA2, Level 2

  • Departure Hall, Level 1, KL Sentral

With the KL TravelPass, you can also load cash onto it which extends it for use on rapidKL bus services. In addition, the cash value may also be used to pay at select retail and food/beverage outlets. Participating outlets and cash reload points feature the Touch and Go sign.

MyCity Pass

The MyCity Pass enables unlimited travel on the rapidKL rail network, similar to the KL TravelPass with the exception trips to an airport. It’s available in either a one or three day option and is available for purchase at any RapidKL railway station.

Concession Cards

Concession cards are transit cards available to Malaysians with certain eligibility criteria met. If you are Malaysian and either 60 years of age, have an eligible disability, or are a student, you may apply for a Concession card. The card itself costs RM15.00 and provides a 50% discount off fares when using rapidKL services.

Journey Tokens

Single Journey tokens are used for travel on rapidKL LRT, Monorail, and MRT services and are valid for one defined journey on the day of issuance. Tokens can be purchased at Token Vending Machines (TVMs) located at the same stations of service and are subject to the slightly more expensive Cash Rate fare. To purchase a token:

1. Choose the transit line

2. Choose the destination

3. Make the payment (cash)

4. Collect token and change, if applicable

To use a single journey token, touch the token at the entry gate to enter a station. After travelling, insert the token at the exit gate to leave the station, unless you are travelling multiple stations, where you can continue tapping the token until you reach the final exit turnstile.

Concession tokens are available to Malaysian citizens who meet the eligibility criteria for either a disability or senior citizenship. Concession tokens can be purchased from a Customer Service officer at the stations of service. Concession tokens work in a similar fashion to Single Journey tokens with the difference of a 50% discount on the fare.

Tokens are being phased out too. Some turnstile places only have a singular turnstile that accepts tokens.

KLIA Train Tickets

The Kuala Lumpur International Airport Trains won’t accept any rapidKL smart card payment methods, unless you had purchased a KL TravelPass (see above) and bundled it with KLIA transfer trips. You can purchase tickets for the KLIA trains at an available self-service kiosk at KL Sentral Station, KLIA, or KLIA2. In addition, you can purchase the tickets online:
